Wouldn’t it be nice to earn a full-time income from your blog?
If you listen to some of the internet marketers out there, they’ll have you believing that making money with a blog is super easy and that you should start earning money on day one of your blog. Unfortunately, the truth is you may not make money on day one, or month one, or year one, unless you have a solid foundation.
In the 10 years I’ve been blogging, I’ve found that there are four core components of every profitable blog. In this article, we’ll discuss the importance of each component and how you can transform your blog to include each of these components.
When it comes to your blog, you need a niche. I understand that many newer bloggers may feel constrained by that, but let me explain why you’ll be doing yourself a HUGE favor by narrowing down your blog’s focus.
Selecting a niche for your blog allows you to concentrate on one thing at all times. It allows you to be laser-focused in your writing, marketing, social media status updates, and it allows you to become a subject matter expert in your field. But more importantly, it allows you to deliver the exact content your target market is looking for at all times.
As a blogger, your primary job is to create content to engage, entertain, and inform your readers. One way you can craft compelling content is to create a blogging mind map to brainstorm blog topics. You can create your own blogging mind map by writing down the main topic of your blog, and then beneath the topic writing down 4-5 subtopics. Underneath those subtopics, you’ll want to write out 3-5 blog post ideas. Once you have 15-20 blog post ideas, you’ll then want to write those ideas down in a content calendar. Most pro-bloggers follow a content calendar, not only because it keeps them organized, but also because it keeps them focused on the content their audience wants.
When it comes to monetizing a blog, traffic is important. The more traffic your site has, the more money it will make with advertising and the more money you can command for writing sponsored posts. Social media sites like Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram are great for driving traffic to a blog. However, the best way to drive traffic to your blog is through search engines. In order to get your blog into search results, you’ll have to learn a little about search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is the process by which you can optimize certain elements of your blog and website in order to rank better in search engines.
Multiple Monetization Streams:
In order to make a full-time income with a blog, it’s important to diversify your revenue streams and engage in as many options as possible. There are several ways to monetize a blog. Some of the most popular ways to make money from your blog are affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, advertising, product creation, and offering services.
- Affiliate Marketing
- Sponsored Posts
Sponsored posts can be lucrative for medium to large bloggers as it allows them to work with national brands. Most sponsored posts work in the following way: The company connects with bloggers either directly or through a 3rd party company and asks the blogger to write about their company, products, or services for a set fee. (This fee can range anywhere from $25 to thousands of dollars depending on the size of the blog.) The blogger then writes the post according to the brand’s request and in turn gets paid once it is published.
Banner advertising is possibly the easiest way for bloggers to earn money. However, it’s only really lucrative when a blog has a steady level of traffic. Advertising works likes this: The blogger places banner ads on the blog and gets paid each time someone clicks on the ad. Google AdSense is the most popular form of banner advertising and a great option for bloggers looking to get started. In order to get started with advertising, the blogger can sign up with Google AdSense. Once accepted into the AdSense program, they will be provided with snippets of code to place on their blog to display ads.
- Product Creation
Many of the six-figure bloggers have monetized their blog through product creation. Ebooks, courses, and in-person trainings are all ways that bloggers have been able to earn money through selling a product. The nice thing about product creation is that it’s mostly passive income. You create the product once and continue to sell it for months and years to come.
Offering services through a blog is a great way for new bloggers to monetize a blog while building it into a full-time business. Many bloggers have had great success through offering services to other bloggers like social media scheduling, ghost writing, or editing services. Other bloggers have monetized their blog by offering consulting services related to their niche.
Affiliate marketing is the term coined for when you get a kickback or make a commission from a product that you promote on your blog or social media. Affiliate marketing can be VERY lucrative depending on which programs you choose to promote. When you promote your favorite products to your readers and they make a purchase through your link, you earn money.
If you find yourself wanting to monetize your blog, I recommend making sure that you have the first three of the components of a profitable blog in place: Niche, Content, and Traffic. Once those components are solid, you’ll really want to start exploring all of the monetization options available to you and your niche.
